Description Colonies spherical when young, later elongate and richly lobed and clathrate, with distinct holes, sometimes composed of subcolonies, reaching macroscopic size (to 6 mm long); cells arranged randomly, rarely densely, in young colonies rather near the colonial surface, but also over the whole colonial content. Mucilage colourless, structureless, with distinctly delimited, smooth, firm, continuous, not diffluent but with refractive outline; gelatinous margin extends 3-6 μm beyond the cell aggregations. Cells spherical, sometimes slightly elongate before division, with distinct aerotopes, 4-7 (8.5-10 ?) μm in diameter. Occurs in several size and morphological modifications, the taxonomic value of which needs elucidation (comp. Cronberg & Komarek 1994). Possibly toxic populations occur, but only non-toxic strains were found in Japan (Kato & Watanabe 1993).  [details]
