Expertise

I am a limnologist specializing in the taxonomy of continental free-living Copepoda of the Americas. Since the 1980s it has been my privilege to work at the Universidade de Brasilia, Brazil, and later as a Research Associate at the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution) and the Virginia Museum of Natural History. Many of my publications deal with the alpha taxonomy of species from under-collected semiterrestrial habitats. In over 150 publications, independently or with colleagues, I have described 12 genera and over 70 species, and contributed several identification keys. As a founding member of the World Association of Copepodologists, I have served in several offices, including as Vice President (1999-2002) and Editor of the Monoculus Copepod Newsletter (2002-2011); and gratefully accepted the Monoculus Award in 2011. In 2000, the Sociedade Brasileira de Carcinologia conferred on me their first award for service in the study of Brazilian crustaceans. Since the 1970s I have worked along with Chad Walter to expand and refine the C. B. Wilson Copepod Library at the NMNH, which is now a significant part of the World Register of Marine Species.
